Edgar Guesthouse
Our guesthouse is located within walking distance of the historic center!
Ramen oudburg
Lunch
Nothing beats a pot of steaming noodles. The noodle bar Ramen is a very tiny place, but the quality is huge. Not only the bowl of noodles fills your heart with joy, the very warm welcome of the owners does too.
Soup’r
Lunch
A very crowded soup bar, but it’s so delicious and worth the wait. A lot of business people, shop owners, local politicians, … pass by to buy their favorite soup for lunch. During the season, don't miss the asparagus soup with small pieces of egg.
Steamy Windows
Lunch
Enjoy a light lunch at this dumpling bar near the shopping area of Ghent. Our personal favorite is the dumpling with beef and Schacha sauce.
Boris & Maurice
Lunch
Not within walking distance but worth a bike ride or car ride up there. A young team, with lots of experience, makes sure you have a refreshing French cuisine dining experience. On the terrace in the back you can flee the busy street.
Copyright Bookshop
Shop
Art and architecture bookshop. Nice to wander around even if both genres mean nothing to you.
Paard Van Troje
Shop
Authentic bookshop. Their recommendations are excellent, not only the books, but also their small collections of cd’s.
Fien Leroy
Shop
Starting with a continuous fascination for the relationship between body, objects and aesthetics Fien started her own jewelry shop nearby. Every piece is created by hand, with great balance between the simplicity of a design and the complexity of the execution.
A Taste Affair
Shop
The perfect place to buy some natural wines. A taste affair is also a family affair. The super friendly daughter Els or Hugo, full of experience, will gladly help you to find the bottle of wine you’re looking for. Not the average opening hours, check them online.
Onderbergen
Shop
Small street parallel to the main shopping street of Ghent, but with some more alternative yet exclusive shops. Think design furniture, jewellery and boutiques.
Gitane
Aperitivo/bar
This little café is situated in a narrow alleyway near the vrijdagmarkt and it’s the perfect place if you like to enjoy a good beer in a cosy ambient. The owner is super friendly and has great knowledge of all the beers he serves. We love to enjoy a nightcap in Gitane after a busy Friday evening in our restaurant. Don’t forget to order their homemade shrimp croquettes, they are the best!
Minor Swing
Apero:
Feel immediately at ease in this cozy no-nonsense cafe. Order a drink at the bar and enjoy the chatter in the room with some jazz music in the background.
Edgar kaasbar
Diner
Do you like cheese. Yes? We do too. A lot! You are very welcome at our cheese bar, just around the corner. During winter time we warm you with some raclette, cheese fondue or cheese platters. In summertime we have a nice green terrace in the back where you can escape the buzzing city and have a little wine with some cheese tappas.
Aperto Chiuso
Diner
Somewhere hidden between the Turkish pizza restaurants (no bad word about them, they are good) in the Sleepstraat you’ll find a lovely Italian restaurant. It’s that kind of place where you feel at ease every season. A warm and cosy interior for winter diners and a patio that make you feel like your at the Mediterranean Sea for hot summer evenings. Whether we’re talking about the aperitivo, antipasti, main dishes or desserts, it’s all lovely.
Amigo
Diner
Bar – resto – disco. Amigo is one of those places who has it all. But don’t let me be misunderstood, they serve quality. The cocktails are nicely finished, the dishes are gastronomical and the parties in the basement make you stay until dawn. Perfect place to start your weekend.
Alberte
Diner
Not just another restaurant. Their bold choice to open a restaurant at the Dampoort area reflects in the combinations they serve. The dishes made with local, seasonal products may be courageous or unexpecting, they are fresh, subtle and always gastronomical. All those good things are sides by a fine selection of wines. Personal favorite.
Publiek
Diner
You’re not lost, you’re here. Olly Ceulenaere has put Publiek(*) in Ghent on the map without typical luxury ingredients. Through an unsophisticated atmosphere and surprising vegetable dishes, he makes every effort to make his guests forget their worries. Enjoy this Michelin starred restaurant and end the night with a romantic stroll along water of marina Portus Ganda to Edgar Guesthouse.
Golden gai
Diner
Go for a hot bowl of noodles in de Dampoortstraat. This restaurant is not too expensive unless you fall for their exuberant cocktails. They are soooo good. Great atmosphere, great staff, great comfort food.
L’apéro d’oc
Aperitivo/bar
Apero d’oc serves a variety of French specialties sided by some very fine wines. Located next to the waterfront, they have the perfect terrace (and food) to enjoy the good life on a hot summer evening. Another possibility: go on Sunday morning when the second hand book market fills the street.
Ona
Aperitivo/bar
As much as we love Edelrot, we feel the same for Ona. This wine bar exudes a feminine sophistication. Ona & Arne always seek pure, original wines full of flavour and character. Both wine bars are on the same street and only a 2-minute walk from the guesthouse. Choose your favorite or combine both :)
Edelrot
Aperitivo/bar
Not just another winebar, because in comparison with the others, you’ll be here for their excellent taste of natural wines. Besides, we love coming to this bar for its terrace, good music taste and wide range of non-alcoholic drinks. You can also order homemade snacks until late - choose the bitterballen with tarragon mayonnaise, yum. Their terrace close to the Belfry makes it a nice place to combine with a visit to the city centre.
Ventura
Aperitivo/bar
Hipster spot. Some stay outside all night discussing at the warmth of the heaters, others go dancing inside at some funky, eighties or groovy alternative music.
Take five
Brunch/Coffee
Pure craftsmanship. This place breathes coffee and sometimes you can even smell the roasted beans outside. Take five is close to the main shopping street of Ghent, what makes is crowded on Saturdays. Laidback on weekdays, but when it’s too crowded a take away coffee between two shops is the better option. Alternatively you can enjoy their second coffee bar at the library ‘Krook’.
Valeir
Brunch/Coffee
Nearby: check. View over the canal: check. Sunny terrace in the morning: check. Nice and friendly staff: check. Add up the delicious ice cream and you know why you should definitely consider passing by.
Mortier
Diner
Mortier is a restaurant and cosy bar in Ghent's Dampoortstraat. Owned and staffed by some very kind and warm-hearted people, it’s difficult to find a place where you feel more welcome. Chef Thomas Mortier's fresh cuisine is inspired by Italian traditions. A love for freshly made pasta, risotto prepared à la minute, and the flavors of the season. Just as Italian cuisine is originally very region-specific, Mortier works with the finest local ingredients.
Touche
Brunch/Coffee
This place is the closest to the guesthouse. Choose how extensive you want to have breakfast with their handy formulas. Next to the coffee shop you will find a cosy plant shop
Bar bidon
Brunch/Coffee
This coffee bar started as a bicycle/coffeeshop, but nowadays the focus is more on the coffee. Next to the proximity, the other big plus is their nice, sunny terrace with views over the canal.
